At the 3rd Farmers' Literary Award Ceremony held on November 1, Yu Xiuhua, a top-selling female poet from central China's Hubei Province, won first prize and claimed 30,000 yuan (U.S.$ 4,400).

Yu was the only Chinese female working-class author to have sold more than 100,000 volumes of poetry in the 1990s, a huge number in those days.

The ceremony was sponsored by Zhang Yiyi, a famous writer from central China's Hunan Province. He has organized the award since 2014.

At the event, Zhang said it was wonderful to encourage farmers to write stories about their own lives. He believes that such endeavors can help improve their social status whilst also enriching their spiritual and cultural lives.
