About 2,000 college students from southwest China's Chengdu and Chongqing took part in a rare and controversial watermelon fight on Sunday afternoon, according to the Beijing News.

Over a ton of watermelons worth 6,000 yuan (U.S.$ 900) were smashed in under an hour, as students pelted each other with the melon pulp.

Organizers say the activity used watermelons of low quality that were unlikely to be sold and the activity helped the college students relieve stress.

But many netizens have called the event a waste, and have cast doubt on whether the activity is a proper way for students to let off steam.

Experts say the activity should not be blamed as different people have different methods for relieving pressure and they should be carried out as long as they are effective and do not hurt others or upset public order.

More importantly, the experts noted, the schools should attach more importance to providing psychological counseling for students to help them relieve pressure in proper ways.
