An off-duty nurse recently gave first aid, using nothing more than an ear stud, to "save" a male tourist who fainted from heatstroke when visiting the Great Wall in Beijing, according to reports.

Sun Yanju, from Yanling County in central China's Henan Province, was with her family and about to leave when she encountered the scene.

Asking his relatives about the situation, Sun, with over 10 years' experience in medical care, appliedacupuncture treatment to the man immediately.

Having no first aid kit, Sun borrowed an ear stud from a female visitor and carried out the procedure. About 10 minutes later, the man gradually regained awareness.

Sun then left with her tourist group by bus.

One week later, local media in Henan posted the news on its WeChat (an instant messaging app) account, sparking hot discussion among Chinese netizens.

"It is simply a miracle that a small ear stud should save a person's life. What 'prehistoric power' has the nurse used?" one commented.

"Well done, our 'angel in white'! This is what the so-called great love is. At such a critical moment, she utilized her professional medical skills and demonstrated the kindhearted side of human nature," commented Chunnuanhuakai.

"If everyone behaved like the nurse, there would be no controversy over whether to help a collapsed person (seniors in most cases) or not. It is her decisiveness and wit that saved the tourist's life promptly!" commented Nuannandabaibai.

Based on the patient's situation and her medical training, Sun adopted the needle therapy without a second thought. It has been dubbed by some as "Mysterious Power of the Orient," along with cupping therapy and gua sha (scraping bruises).

A netizen with medical knowledge warned: "The man's faint was caused by heatstroke, and the positions where Sun punctured his skin are veins. It involves much medical knowledge and technique, so non-professionals should avoid imitation."

Asked about that day's heroic deed, Sun said she did not think much and just wanted to "do her most to save the man."
