Generous Chinese Couple Divert Wedding Fund to Help Single Moms

A young couple in Chaozhou, south China's Guangdong Province donated 1.8 million yuan (U.S. $ 270,000) originally set aside for their wedding ceremony, to help 450 single moms in the city.

The husband Zhan Yihao and his wife Chen Youjia chose to arrange a simple ritual and had a dinner with family members and several relatives on their wedding day, November 1, 2015.

Without a luxury location, hearty feast or even a wedding dress for the bride, the wedding seemed somewhat "shabby," especially in the region where people love and seek grand ceremonies.

"Everyone may want a big wedding. But however luxurious it is, it will be gone," said Zhan.

Born to the family of a wealthy entrepreneur, Zhan has enough money to afford a fancy marriage ceremony, and he did think about having one; yet, his charity-devoted father changed his mind.

The father Zhan Jianhua has donated some 100 million yuan (U.S. $15 million) for the public good over the past two decades, using the profits from his companies. He has also taken his son to join in some of the events, ever since he was young.

When it came to the marriage of the youngster, Zhan Jianhua hoped that he could have a simple wedding and save the money for those in need. The idea was supported by both the groom and the bride.

Accordingly, 450 single mothers mired in poverty received 4,000 yuan (U.S. $610) each, thanks to Zhan's donation.

"The money is really helpful to the impoverished mothers. They can at least enjoy the upcoming Spring Festival with their children," said an official from the local women's Federation.
