Pu Wei, who lives with his family in Xi'an, recently undertook a challenge with his son to travel from Xi'an to Lanzhou (a distance of over 600 kilometers) on foot, taking only 100 yuan (U.S.$ 15). Pu hopes that this travel experience will temper his son's will and let him experience more of the world.
Pu is a quasi-celebrity within Shaanxi Province's outdoor sports scene. He has a wealth o foutdoor sporting experience, including a climb on Mount Everest. Pu's nickname for his son is "Brother Bean." He said that although Brother Bean is only 8 and a half, he already has some outdoor experiences under his belt. Pu is not overly worried about his son's physical strength and stamina during the trip.
On the morning of July 7, carrying only the essentials, Pu and his son started the long journey from Xi'an. During the first day, they walked 18 kilometers. Because of the hot weather, they occasionally attempted to secure car rides from passing vehicles, but they were often refused. So far they have received four rides during their trip. Upon learning the purpose of their travels, some kind strangers have been happy to provide help. "We ate food given by some warm-hearted people. We spent our first night in front of the door of a farmer's house," Pu said.
July 9 was the third day of travel for Pu and his son. Their 100-yuan travel fund remains untouched. Pu was tempted to spend it several times when he saw that his son was exhausted and hungry. But each time Brother Bean said, "If we didn't spend it yesterday, we can also make it today." The boy has also said, "If one day we do spend all our money, we can still continue our journey and earn money at the same time." Pu was very touched by the young boy's determination.
An employee of the Family Education Research Association, Wang Guoqi, said that this kind of travel may not be advisable for most families. Parents need to priotize their children's safety and health, Wang emphasized.
