Luo Daoru and Jiang Meiya, a senior couple in east China’s Zhejiang Province, have recently become a hit online after publishing a book about their road trips.
The pair, in their late 60s and 70s, have traveled around 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China by car over the past three years.
The initial motivation for their first journey came from Luo's ambition to reach all "four corners of the sky," as he had traveled on business to the most southern, northern and eastern tips of China without going to the western region.
After dispelling the concerns of his children over his age and health conditions, Luo took his wife Jiang, and they embarked on their trip to northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 2012.
After their tour of Xinjiang, the couple felt more confident about travels of longer distances.
"There is a wonderful world out there; the more we travel, the more we feel like continuing on," said Jiang.
Before long, they started their journey to southern China's Hainan Province on December 18, 2013. Although they resided in cheap inns along the way and ate simple meals of instant noodles for much of the time, they felt all was worthwhile.
Luo and Jiang drove through a great number of provinces to finally reach home on March 21, 2014.
The three-month-long road trip attracted many friends to the seniors for their experiences and advices, prompting Guo to write a book about their trips.
Writing over 4,000 words a day, Guo finished the draft within two months. Then, with the help of his daughter and a local writer, the book was finally put to print with the title "An Old Man Drives His Geely Across the Country."
"I have some money, but only enough for planned spending. We are both quite old now. If I wait till I have got enough, we may become too fragile and need to be supported by others. By that point, the idea of traveling would be nothing but fantasy," Guo wrote in the postscript of the book.
