Dama Rescues Drowning Boy in SW China's Guizhou

Wang Youqun, a 50-year old woman from Duyun, a city in southwest China's Guizhou Province, has recently demonstrated a different side to the country's middle-aged ladies, by rescuing a drowning boy and quietly leaving the scene.

The boy was rollerskating, and all of a sudden got out of control, tumbling into the river. Whilst bystanders were screaming in panic, Wang jumped into the freezing water and swam hard to fetch the kid. After painstaking efforts, she lifted the youngster to the bank with the help of others.

After urging care for the rescued child, Wang did not climb ashore, but swam again to the other side of the river, refusing anything in return or answering media reports. It was no big deal, she said.

Dama, the middle-aged Chinese women, are often thought of as having a lot of money but little education, chasing after gold, luxury goods and profits. But Wang showed the public that when the time comes for urgent action, they can be heroes just as much as anyone.
