Bright Spark Appointed Official of Shanghai Youth League

Shi Yichan [China News Service]

Shi Yichan, a 29-year-old woman devoted to voluntary services, was appointed as part-time vice-secretary of the Shanghai Youth League, a government-backed initiative for young people, on February 29.

Shi, the youngest among eight appointees, has in recent years been working as director of Elite Union, an organization uniting over 50,000 white-collar workers.

Apart from providing various services for the members, Shi has already helped establish 21 youth associations and led them in launching some 120 charity events, providing assistance to over 30,000 people.

When Shi returned her native city Shanghai in 2014, her experience with the student union at Fudan University, coupled with a diploma in International Human Resource Management from Newcastle University in the UK, won her offers from several foreign companies.

Nevertheless, she declined all the jobs with high salaries, and persuaded her family to support her decision to join the social group. Her efforts and achievements in the organization have been applauded by the public and the city's authorities, among others.

"I feel glad but a little nervous about the appointment. I have no experience in youth league work," said Shi.

"However, the seven members of our group average less than 30 years old, and we mainly serve the younger generation. I think we have advantages in the job."
