If you don’t need your credit card any more then it’s still best to deal with your account sooner rather than later – here’s how.
What to do
The first thing to consider is whether you really want to close your credit card account. Getting a credit card in China is not particularly easy for foreigners, and if you close one account, the same bank may not issue you with a second account.
If you do decide to close your account, here’s what you’ll need to do.
- Make sure you have paid off any outstanding balance (or used any remaining credit) on your account.
- Call your bank’s customer service hotline. The number should be listed on the back of your credit card. Most banks will offer an English-language service.
- Ask for your account to be closed.
- Once you know that your account has been closed, destroy your card and dispose of it.
Alternatively, you can go to the bank branch where you opened your account with your card and passport and have your account closed there.
Other notes
- If you lost your old credit card, and you want to close your account, you must visit your bank in person.
- If you activated online banking services with your credit card, you can either deactivate the service online first, or ask the teller to deactivate the online banking service at the same time as you close your credit card account.
